Oscoda’s Independence Day celebration is a cherished tradition. On
July 4, the community gathers for the
Stars, Stripes & Future Lights parade, which begins at
11 a.m. at Furtaw Field. The Oscoda‑AuSable Chamber encourages participants to design floats with red, white and blue creativity—think futuristic Americana, lights, motion and music. After cheering on the floats, head to Oscoda Beach Park at dusk for a spectacular fireworks show over Lake Huron. Bring lawn chairs, blankets and sparklers for a memorable evening on the sand.
Witness the Au Sable River Canoe Marathon
Later in July, all eyes turn to the
Au Sable River Canoe Marathon, called the “World’s Toughest Spectator Race.” Starting at
9 p.m. on July 25, elite paddlers from around the world embark on a
non‑stop 120‑mile canoe race from Grayling to Oscoda. Competitors battle portages, darkness and fatigue as they navigate the challenging course competing for over $75,000 in prizes. Spectators line the riverbanks throughout the night and can track teams via GPS. When the racers reach Oscoda on July 26, the town celebrates with the
Finish Line Festival & Street Party, featuring vendors, live music, dancing, games, food trucks and a cornhole tournament. It’s a family‑friendly way to welcome the paddlers home.
Enjoy the Iosco County Fair and Movies by the Pier

July 27 through August 1, the
Iosco County Fair in Hale offers classic summer fun. The fair—founded in 1944—features children’s activities, entertainment, food and merchandise vendors, agricultural competitions, livestock shows and grandstand events. A new Tuesday night grandstand concert will showcase Nashville singer‑songwriter
Tege Holt performing country hits and original songs. Throughout the week, visitors can enjoy free daily shows like
Tumbleweed Crossing, a comedic Wild West gunfight stunt show, and
The Amazing Bubble Factory, where a “Bubbleologist” creates bubbles the size of minivans. Admission to the fair is free thanks to local sponsors.
On Wednesdays in July and August,
Movies by the Pier screens family‑friendly films at dusk on Oscoda Beach Park. Pack popcorn, spread out your blanket and enjoy a movie under the stars after a day at the resort.
